Gawad Metronian Educational Foundation, Inc. (GMEFI), a social responsibility arm of Metro Manila College (MMC) currently has 28 scholars from the Punduhan ng mga Dumagat managed by Bro. Martin Francisco.
Last January 30, its President Dr. Evelyne M. Dominguez, Board Member Mirana Medina, Executive Director Marilou Almenario and Funds Manager Catherine Genovia-Torres together with Metro Manila College (MMC) Dean of Graduate Studies, Dr. Dana Tebia, MMC Community Extension Service Director, Mrs. Glenda Ortiz, teachers, staff and volunteer students visited the Punduhan ng mga Dumagat located in Norzagaray, Bulacan. The group met with Bro. Martin Francisco and had the opportunity to interview him about living with the Dumagats, their way of life, culture and language.
Former GMEFI scholar Michael Lauta, an MMC teacher handling the Dumagat scholars together with MMC volunteer teachers, staff and students taught and assisted them in planting the “kamote” or sweet potatoes. Teacher Michael and Mrs. Ortiz also demonstrated the IP learners on how to plant a cacao. Mrs Ortiz who brought some fresh cacao fruits let everybody present see and taste it. Later, chocolate drink made out of cacao was prepared on the spot so that they would be able to enjoy and fully appreciate it.
