“Mobile Music School for Street Kids” is Childhope’s yearlong activity to promote the welfare of street children in the Philippines. Childhope, the 4th recipient of Gawad Metronian Educational Foundation, Inc. [GMEFI] Community Educational Fund Assistance is an NGO that works toward the liberation of these children from the suffering caused by living and working on the streets.
Mobile Music School or Rock-Education (Rock-Ed) is under Childhope’s banner program, Outreach and Protection/Education of the Streets. It is a music and dance education programme developed by Deutsche Bank Group Manila volunteers for street children in Manila, Philippines. The project began on May 2009 with a simple idea: to offer music lessons to street children. Mobile Music School is based on the belief that music plays a key role in empowering children as they discover their talent. Besides offering an opportunity to learn music, the project has helped in giving the children confidence and self-belief that a better life is attainable.
Through Childhope’s banner program, the street children are provided protection from abuse, opportunities to develop knowledge about their rights and responsibilities and the risks encountered on the streets, develop positive behavior, gain/improve their life skills and capacities, and eventually assist them to leave the street through referral to recovery centers or to relatives who are not the child’s abusers.
In so doing, the organization has advocated and established, maintained and strengthened partnerships with other groups, individuals, agencies and other sectors of society. With its multi-problems and complexities, effectively addressing the street children’s needs requires concerted efforts from everyone. It is at this point that GMEFI comes in to support Childhope’s efforts..
In its Board resolution dated April 21, 2017, GMEFI board members decided to support Childhope’s “Mobile Music School for Street Kids” by extending the amount of Php30,000.00 that will be used to cover the cost of supplies that they will incur in the implementation of the project.
Mobile Music School activities are held in all the areas where Childhope operates, namely: Manila, Pasay, Paranaque, Caloocan. Below are the exact venues:
• Baptist Church, Caloocan City
• Binondo Church, Quintin Paredes St., Binondo, Manila
• Arocerros Forest Park Manila, Lawton, Manila
• Phase 2, Rizal Park
• EAC, Ermita, Manila
• Bridge Builders Foundation, Baclaran, Pasay City
Since 1994, some 1,200 street children every year have benefited from Childhope’s Street Education Program. With Childhope, GMEFI hopes that street kids’ hidden talents in music and the arts will be discovered and developed to the fullest. The Mobile Music School expects to reach more street children to play acoustic musical instruments, ie. guitar, beat box, ukulele, etc. Street children mobility has always been a challenge. By taking Rock-Ed to the streets, the opportunity to change the lives of at least 50 street children per year is there.
